The students have scored very low this past year (10 out of the 11 high schools!). Our biggest weakness is reading comprehension. Are we using Carolyn D's words and questions of the day? Are we looking to write a few test questions that are styled like the SAT questions? Remember, most of the questions on the SAT are not knowledge level(level 1), but are at application or analysis levels (levels 3 & 4). Take a look at the Critical Thinking wheel that I put on your desk a few weeks ago. Take out a test(any test)that you give and look at the questions. Where do most of them fit in? Let me do a little explaining with UBD. Basically it is used to design UNITS and lessons so that we are teaching broad topics...not just facts. You want the students to end up with a very broad and useful knowledge base. This broad topic is called your essential questions. Basically what the student should know at the end of the unit. But this knowledge must be applicable to life, not just a bunch of facts. It needs to be useful!
\nThe real dirt on this planning is that you actually do the planning backwards! You plan based upon what you want them to know. In other words, you decide upon your broad topic(s) or essential questions. Then you figure out what the end product will be. What will the students do to prove that they know it? What is the "assessment" gonna look like? Then, you plan how you will get there. The focus is on learning for the real world, not regurgitating facts.
\nAll that being said, this process of learning UBD format is quite daunting. It is a difficult thing to learn. I am going to include an example of a UBD unit for PE in an email. It won't post correctly here. Look at the essential questions. This is where we are going to start with our planning. Just coming up with essential questions.
\nPlease understand that I do not expect everyone to change to this now...we are WORKING toward this! DO NOT PANIC! You just need some form of lesson plan DAILY right now, not necessarily this one. But, by the end of the year we should be getting there slowly.
\nPlease look at the unit plan I am sending and tell me what you think. Focus on essential questions. I will post again on Monday 10\/27 with another task for you!","dateCreated":"1224810812","smartDate":"Oct 23, 2008","userCreated":{"username":"lamorris1","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/lamorris1","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/pic\/1225062570\/lamorris1-lg.jpg"}},{"id":"6405933","body":"Is this for PE only or both Health and PE? The big thing is not what you are grading on but what the students are expected to take with them out of the class...the knowledge that they gain. This goes hand in hand with our new directive of creating the 21st Century student. Not someone who can regurgitate facts, but can relate to the big picture of the real world. Unfortunately, we have been teaching a bunch of facts for way too long and we need to redirect our focus to the bigger picture (in health!). In PE we are already doing better with the dynamic warmup and also with the focus on fitness. That is our ultimate goal, creating students who are or at least understand what being fit is about. Oh, and why they need to be fit!

The two you need to focus on are the 10th grade essential questions and the 9th grade essential Questions. Take a look at the area in which you teach. (Rich look at 10th grade\/John look at 9th grade). I have simply listed the three or four units that we teach. I am assigning each of you a unit to look at and come up with 3-5 essential questions for that unit. I would like for you to do this task without looking at the curriculum notebook if possible. Just go from your memory and your notes\/lessons if you can. Remember the essential questions are the big questions that the unit should answer for the student. These are not facts or individual concepts, but big umbrella-like ideas. Please type in your essential questions on the page of the wiki that it corresponds to and save it. That way everyone can see it. We will be working with these during an upcoming meeting on November 3. So, get this done by Friday please. Thanks.

\nPacer = How many pacer laps can a student run in 3-5-8-10 min. w\/out stopping? Start the pacer at #30. Make the laps longer\/shorter, help them be successful w\/ shorter laps and more challenging w\/ longer.
\nSit & Reach (back saver) = Variation of stretching
