The concensus is that we will begin daily fitness testing immediately. Students will perform at least one fitness test, or some activity that measures/improves the specific fitness component that would normally be tested during the first four days of the PE rotation. The final day of the rotation (not week!), if students have been cooperative and working hard, open gym is an option for warmup. This will serve as motivation to get them to cooperate and work hard, while also helping to preserve our equipment. The schedule for which tests will be performed on which days is up to each grade level. Teachers will work together to create a schedule that works for their group.
The information below is the schedule we will aspire to follow: Class schedule
7 min - Dress Out
3 min - Walk Gym (all teachers in gym)
10 min - Stretch/warm up
10 min - Test/practice
50 min - Activity
10 min - Dress Out
We will also do variations of the tests so the students don't become physically and mentally bored.
For Example
Push-up = Bench press the bar at the same cadence. # of pushups in 1-2 min.
Sit-up = Variation of ab exercises for time. # of sit-ups in 1-2 min.
Pacer = How many pacer laps can a student run in 3-5-8-10 min. w/out stopping? Start the pacer at #30. Make the laps longer/shorter, help them be successful w/ shorter laps and more challenging w/ longer.
Sit & Reach (back saver) = Variation of stretching
Trunk lift = Variation of exercises (like it matters)
We can also add some different tests that are fun and competetive such as vertical jump, basketball throw, 1 lap run for time, pull-ups etc...
When it coordinates with Level I & II classes, the Weight Training Level III will administer tests (1A, 2A & 4A). The Weight Training Level IV will administer tests, help set goals and make decisions on what to practice due to test scores (part of their project/curriculum).
Each teacher will provide a fitness reporting card for each student. The teachers will keep these cards and bring them out to each class daily. The students are responsible for recording the scores that they receive, and setting a goal for each test. Teachers and/or Weight Training students will help PE students set appropriately challenging goals for each test. Students will not be given the original Fitnessgram score sheets. A new scoresheet will be distributed on Monday Oct. 6 which will only show students the EXCELLENT score for each test. That is the only score we want them to focus on attaining. If we report the lower end of the zone, many will never aspire to improve once they meet that level.
Teachers will check the student's cards daily at first, then weekly or as needed. At the end of the rotation of PE, the best scores for each student will be recorded on a poster, which will be hung up in the classroom during the following 2week rotation of health/driver ed. At some point during that classroom rotation, the teacher will go over the class record and recognize those meeting goals. Rewards will be given at the end of each 9 weeks. Suggested rewards are 2pts extra credit in PE for each goal met during the 9 weeks. Teachers may implement other rewards with approval from Department Chairperson.
Ultimate Goal: 60% or more of entire PE enrollment scoring within the Wellness Zone for Fitnessgram reporting.
